BLACK LIBERATION AND SOCIALISM: End the New Jim Crow

From the shameless anti-Black rhetoric featured in the Republican Presidential debates to the mass incarceration of young Black men and murder of Trayvon Martin and Bo Morrison, the question of how to fight racism remains one of the most pressing issues our society faces today.

Have you ever wondered where racism came from, why racial inequality still exists under an African-American President, or whether we can ever see an end to racial oppression? This talk is for you. Shawki will provide a historical overview of the roots of racism and the connections between racialized oppression and capitalism. He will discuss the history of struggles for Black liberation in the U.S. since the end of slavery, including the roles of important figures such as Huey Newton, Martin Luther King Jr., and Malcolm X.

Following Shawki’s talk, the audience will discuss building an anti-racist movement that recognizes the inextricable connection between racial oppression and capitalism.

Ahmed Shawki is a socialist activist and journalist, the editor of the International Socialist Review and a leader of the International Socialist Organization. He also serves on the steering committee of the National Council of Arab-Americans.
